We have a team of 10 experienced emergency veterinarians staffing the clinic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
We operate on a triage system:
This means that your pet is assessed within minutes by one of our experienced veterinary technologists. Your pet is then put in queue to see the veterinarian according to how critical their needs are. Our emergency veterinary hospital is staffed to minimize wait times, however, during very busy periods wait times can happen if your pet is deemed medically stable. If more advanced diagnostics or therapies are required, the emergency medical team at Pulse have access to board-certified specialists and residency trained veterinarians in the fields of Cardiology, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, and Radiology. While we do not specialize in exotics, we have a veterinarian on staff with advanced training in this area who is happy to help your furry, feathery and scaly family members!

- Once you arrive, please stay in your vehicle in our parking lot, call 780-570-9999 and we’ll come to you.
- In order to keep everyone safe, any clients entering the veterinary hospital are required to wear a face mask and sanitize their hands.

We have the only board-certified veterinary radiologist in Edmonton
Pulse Veterinary Specialists and Emergency is proud to have the only board-certified veterinary Radiologist in Northern Alberta. Dr. Kawalilak heads our diagnostic imaging department, overseeing abdominal ultrasound, radiology, and computed tomography (CT scan).
We have the only veterinary cardiologist in Edmonton
Dr. Hawkes, the head of our cardiology department, was the first and only veterinary cardiologist in the province and remains the only cardiologist in Edmonton. Dr. Hawkes is able to provide echocardiograms, EKG interpretation, Holter monitoring, and non-invasive surgical options for PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) occlusion, and pulmonary stenosis ballooning procedures.
We have the first residency trained dentist in Edmonton
Dr. Christopher Sauve is the first residency trained dentist in the Edmonton area. His practice focuses solely on diseases of the mouth and oral cavity. Dr. Sauve performs advanced endodontics such as root canals, addresses severe malocclusions, surgical management of oral tumours and jaw fractures.
We have the only board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist in Edmonton
Dr. Buechner is the only board-certified ophthalmologist to serve the Edmonton and surrounding area. Dr. Buechner is able to assess and treat all manners of medical and surgical ophthalmic diseases.
Advanced Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Curtis Cathcart heads the surgical department at Pulse. Dr. Cathcart enjoys all manner of advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Dr. Cathcart is currently working towards being certified in total hip replacements.
We have the first residency trained veterinary neurologist in Edmonton
Pulse Veterinary Specialists and Emergency is proud to bring the first residency trained veterinary neurologist to the Edmonton area. Dr. Casey Smith will be starting practice in Spring 2021. Dr. Smith is trained in both medical and surgical management of neurologic diseases. Pulse is currently working on bringing the first MRI dedicated exclusively to pets to Edmonton and Northern Alberta in June of 2021.

Are your fees more expensive because you are a 24-hour emergency vet hospital?
We charge according to the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association fee guide (the fees suggested by our association). Some hospitals bill above these, many are at fee guide, and some are below.
Do you offer payment plans?
While we do not offer payment plans, we strive to offer a treatment plan that will fit within your budget. We also work with many third-party lenders.
Do you have access to blood products?
We are proud to have the Canadian Animal Blood Bank housed within Pulse Veterinary Specialists and Emergency. As such, we always have blood and plasma on hand.
Do you direct bill my insurance company?
We offer direct billing for many of the major insurance companies, however, some do not offer direct billing as an option. Please call us if you have direct billing questions.
Is my pet ever left unattended?
No! we have at least one veterinarian and multiple registered veterinary technologists, as well as support staff on-site at all hours.
Do my records get sent to my family veterinarian?
Absolutely! We send the records within 24 hours of your family member leaving the hospital. We work closely with your veterinarian to ensure the best possible care and continuity is provided.
